Where to Enjoy Destin’s White Sands: A Roundup of Public Beaches & Access Points

The glorious white-sand beaches of Destin—the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”—share equal billing with the legendary sportfishing when it comes to the Florida Panhandle city’s top-draw attractions.

While many beaches here are privately owned, available (for example) to hotel/resort guests and condo residents, there’s also a lot of spectacular sand open to the public—and, in many cases, not costing a cent to enjoy!

The Famous Sugar Sands of Florida’s Emerald Coast

Destin offers a fabulous introduction to the famous white-sand beaches of the Florida Panhandle’s Emerald Coast. These “sugar sands,” as they’re often fondly called, derive from quartz weathered from the old rocks of the Southern Appalachians and washed out to the Gulf of Mexico via the drainage system of the Apalachicola River. Coastal currents then bring those quartz sands ashore, providing the building blocks for the brilliant powdery beaches and dunes that distinguish this lovely seacoast.

The contrast of the white-sand beach face against the namesake green-tinted waters of the Gulf make sunbathing, swimming, and sunset-watching in and around Destin altogether dreamy!

Public Beaches & Beach Accesses in Destin

The following beachfronts and beach access points, which include city-, county-, and state-owned strands, are all open to the public, and most of them are free to use.

Henderson Beach State Park

1700 Emerald Coast Pkwy, Destin, FL

One of the crown jewels of the Destin beachfront is the mile-plus swath of sugar sands protected in Henderson Beach State Park (and yours to enjoy with park admission). The beach and its swimming and fishing opportunities are a top draw, but the park’s also significant for other native Emerald Coast habitat imperiled by development, including dunes and coastal scrub of Choctawhatchee sand pines, myrtle oaks, and sand live oaks.

Loggerhead and green sea turtles nest at Henderson Beach State Park, where you might also spot bottlenose dolphins offshore and get to admire strings of brown pelicans cruising above the breakers.

June White Decker Beach Park

1950 Scenic Hwy 98, Destin, FL

A designated parking lot with 72 spaces as well as nearby street parking provide access to the roughly thousand-foot stretch of free and public beach that draws folks to June White Decker Park, situated not far west from Henderson Beach State Park. (There’s a bike rack here, too, in case you want to get here by pedal power.) This popular park, open dawn to dusk, includes a restroom and outdoor showers.

Calhoun Public Beach Access also adjoins June White Decker Beach Park, making a sort of triple-header of free public beachgoing with it and the Silver Shells access. There’s parking available as well as public restrooms.

Norriego Point Beach Access & Park

Gulf Shore Dr, Destin, FL

You’ll find some of the best beachgoing, swimming, and snorkeling opportunities in Destin at Norriego Point Park, covering close to 10 acres at the northwestern end of the Holiday Isle peninsula. Here, the sandy reach of Norriego Point lies between Destin Harbor and East Pass (the link between Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico), and its calm inshore waters include multiple sheltered spots for taking a dip.

Another free beach-access point maintained by the City of Destin, Norriego Point Park has somewhat limited parking (27 spaces), so consider arriving early to enjoy its sand-between-the-toes charms.

Shore at Crystal Beach Park

2966 Scenic Hwy 98, Destin, FL

This free city-managed access point—which has lately undergone expansion (including of its originally quite-limited parking area)—gives you some 65 feet of Gulf of Mexico beach to enjoy, backed up by restrooms, showers, a pavilion, and picnic tables.

Among the newest additions to Destin’s public beachfront, Tarpon Beach Park, which opened in the Crystal Beach area, was the product of a collaboration between the City of Destin and the Okaloosa County Commission as well as the Trust for Public Land and the Tourist Development Council.

Encompassing an impressive 340-plus feet of sandy shore, Tarpon Beach Park has showers and will ultimately include restrooms as well.

James Lee Park

3510 Scenic Hwy 98, Destin, FL

The only Okaloosa County-run park in Destin, James Lee Park is another stellar swath of white-sand loveliness (a quarter-mile or so of it) reached via multiple dune walkovers. This free park has some 170 parking spaces (including handicapped-designated and golf-cart-only ones) as well as a trio of pavilions, many picnic tables, and restrooms.

Other Public Beach Access Points

Among the other free City of Destin beachgoing entry points are the Pompano Street (Pompano St. & Scenic Hwy 98), Shirah Street (Shirah St. & Scenic Hwy 98), and Barracuda Street (Barracuda & Scenic Hwy 98) public beach accesses in the Crystal Beach area as well as the O’Steen Public Beach Access (Gulf Shore Dr) on Holiday Isle not far from Norriego Point. Like the other city-owned beach accesses, these are open from dawn until dusk.
