Eastern Lake is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by sand dunes that are known to shift. These dunes sometimes open the lake to the Gulf, and other times they cut the lake off from the ocean’s waters. The result is a shallow lake that has a unique ecology and is always fun to visit.
The water of Eastern Lake is wide and shallow, covering 66 acres but not always being deep enough for powerboats. White sand beaches lead into the water on the western side, and the whole lake is nearly surrounded by paved pathways. The combination of shallow water, soft sand and walkways make this one lake that can be enjoyed in a multitude of ways.
Many people come to the lake’s beaches to enjoy a traditional, relaxing time on the sand. The water is much more protected than the open Gulf, so kids can explore with greater confidence. The sand is still perfectly white and soft, and it’s ideally suited for stretching out on a towel, swimming, building sandcastles or any other favorite beach activities.
If you’re interested in venturing out on the water, small boats are welcome. Kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards are common, while powerboats might take water skiers when the depths are sufficiently deep. Because the lake is so shallow, you can often see right to the bottom and will frequently spot fish swimming.
The fishing at Eastern Lake is generally good, although what you’ll catch is literally dependent on what the ocean has brought in. The brackish waters support both fresh and saltwater species, including bass, sunfish, redfish, mutton snapper, flounder and barracuda. Just make sure to get a fishing license before throwing your first cast from shore or your small boat.
For landlubbers, pathways make it easy to explore all sides of the lake. You’ll likely see people walking, jogging, biking and even driving little eco-friendly cars around the paths, depending on what side of the lake you’re enjoying. Of course, you can explore the shifting sand dunes too.
With beautiful water, soft sand and pathways, Eastern Lake has every feature you could want. Come here for a day outdoors, and you’ll have a great time no matter what you plan on doing.
A few of our favorite features at Eastern Lake include:
Sand Beaches
The white sands of Eastern Lake are the same as you’ll find along the Gulf of Mexico around here, and they’re perfect for any beach activity. Head to the sandy beaches for a fun day digging with kids, sunbathing with friends or simply relaxing with a good book.
Sand Dunes
Check out the views from a slightly higher point as you climb the sand dunes that separate Eastern Lake from the Gulf. Winds continually shift the dunes, creating a unique and shifting landscape that’s always interesting to explore.
Pathways
Whether you walk, jog, bike or rollerblade, the pathways are ideal for exercising. They’ll take you past the many parts of Eastern Lake if you follow them all the way around, or you can go a shorter distance and stay near your favorite portion.
Fishing
The lake is perfect for fishing on a kayak since you can paddle across the entire width and are never too deep. Watch your hook below, and you might see the fish before it actually bites your lure.
Insider Tip:
Because Eastern Lake is so shallow, it stays quite warm on sunny days. If you find the Gulf a little too cool for your liking, come here for some more comfortable swimming. The difference in water temperatures is especially pronounced early and late in the season when the Gulf can be particularly cool.
