Does your dog want to enjoy beachfront adventures alongside their fellow canine companions? If so, you need to take them on a trip over to the River Road Dog Park. Located next to the Serene Condominiums on River Road, this Pensacola Beach dog park offers tons of room to run and play. Doggie playdates land here more often than not, giving your pup plenty of chances to make newfound friends.
To go on a trip to the waterfront dog park, take it slow coming up River Road as you approach Semmes Street. Then, look for the unpaved lot and pull in slowly just in case there are any wily pups roaming about. Don’t forget to put your dog on a leash for the trip through the gates. Also, put your belongings in the trunk and lock up your car well.
Read the ‘Bark Park’ rules before going through the gate to learn about the expectations for all dog park visitors. Most of it is common sense, like confirming the gates latch behind you and cleaning up after your dog. There are also local rules to abide by, including a two-dog limit for each handler and filling any holes your dog makes. So, it’s well worth reading through the rules before entering the park.
After that, you just need to walk through the gates to start your dog’s playtime adventures. Only upon latching the gate firmly behind you is it time to let your dog off the leash and give them room to roam. The first fully-gated area gives dogs space to play in the grass while staying 100% fenced in. If your dog is under 20 pounds, you can take them into the small dog area instead for safe playtime away from the larger pups.
If you want to go onto the beach, you’ll have to go out the second gate. On the beach, there’s ample space for dogs to race up and down the sandy shores. There’s also a small agility course set up for your use, featuring jumps, incline ramps, and a teetertotter. And all dogs are able to freely go into the water if they’re so inclined.
Many dogs spend a lot of time sniffing around on their first visit. Friendly pups may find themselves making friends left and right while others hang back to check out all the action. There’s no wrong way for your dog to enjoy the park, so just let them meander about at their leisure.
You’re welcome to sit at the picnic bench under the gazebo while your dog plays. Oftentimes, you’ll find beach chairs open on the sand, left behind by dog park regulars for public use. If there are no seats open, then plopping down on the sand will have to do. Bring a blanket or pop-up beach chair to make your visit even more comfortable.
Many people run, play, and swim with their dogs while visiting the park. Just be aware of any dogs that look tired while in the water. They may jump on the backs of people or other dogs to get a chance to rest if they’re not confident in their ability to get back to shore. To help them out, you can let their owners know that their dog looks quite tired and likely needs to get called back to the beach.
The park provides dog waste bags to use when it comes time to pick up after your pup. But it’s really best to bring your own just in case they run out. Also, remember to bring your dog fresh water and a bowl to drink out of because there’s no running water onsite.
Insider Tips:
-Watch for the no parking signs along River Road. If you park in the wrong spot, you could get towed.
-Never bring toys or treats to the dog park. Dogs prone to resource guarding could start a fight if they notice the extra goodies in their midst.
-The area past the pier is private property. So, stay on the dog park side to avoid trespassing.
-Do not allow your dog to drink the brackish lagoon water. If they do, it’s time to leave or they could get very sick.
