Often, in popular vacation spots, there seem to be unofficial designations on different establishments: they’re either for tourists or for locals. There’s often not a lot of overlap. However, the Grand Lagoon Waterfront Farmer’s Market does just that. This open-air weekend market welcomes regulars, locals, and vacationers alike.
Originally located at Pirate’s Cove Marina, the Grand Lagoon quickly outgrew its space and, in order to continue to grow, opted to relocate. Now positioned outside of Captain Anderson’s on North Lagoon Drive, the market takes place in a prime location right on the water and next to the Grand Lagoon Bridge. This makes it easy to reach not only by car but also by foot and bicycle for those who are staying or living in the area.
This large, wildly popular, well-established market is a year-round mainstay in the Panama City community. In fact, it was even named one of the “Top 10 Things to Do at Panama City Beach” by the New York Times, and after visiting, it’s easy to see why.
This massive market hosts a large number of local farmers, bakers, crafters, and makers. They offer all kinds of wares and goods, from flavored butter to homemade pickles, to a huge selection of spices, to local favorites like hot boiled peanuts, to jams, pies, and prepared foods that, on any given day, might include lumpia, pita sandwiches, empanadas, or tamales. And that’s just the food!
Merchants also present handmade artisan soaps and beauty products, jewelry, arts and crafts, home décor, and more. Local farmers sell freshly harvested local crops that put grocery store produce to shame. Bakers serve up a variety of sweets, bread, and treats that would entice even the most discerning critic. The best part? Vendors can vary from weekend to weekend, so even if you’ve been to the market before, you’re likely to find something new to enjoy every time you return.
And speaking of returning, regular customers (whether visitors or locals) often have a chance to form lasting relationships with the farmers and merchants at the market. It’s not uncommon for vendors to greet repeat customers by name, check in to see how their families are doing, and vice versa. There’s a lovely feeling of friendship and familiarity at the market, which makes the shopping experience uniquely pleasant.
In addition to shopping, the Farmer’s Market also offers a variety of family activities and special events throughout the year, ranging from zucchini racing (yes, you read that right) in July to specialty holiday-themed goods in October and December. Even the non-shoppers in your group can find something to enjoy at Grand Lagoon Waterfront.
While open year-round, days of operation and hours may vary depending on the weather and the season. Right now, Grand Lagoon Waterfront Farmer’s Market is open on Saturday mornings throughout the year, and on Sundays during the cooler months. Before heading over, it never hurts to check the Market’s website or social media accounts to ensure that it will be running on the day you plan to visit. Once you do, let us know about your favorite vendors, snacks, and goods!
Insider Tips:
-There are three dedicated parking lots on the east side of the Grand Lagoon Bridge offering plenty of parking for market attendees. Parking shouldn’t be an issue here.
-Many of the most popular items at the market tend to sell out early in the day. If there is something specific you are looking to buy, we recommend arriving early in the day to avoid missing out.
-Many merchants and vendors at the market have an online presence, and some of them even ship their goods. If you find something at the market that you can’t live without, check in with the vendor to see if you might be able to get more shipped to your house once you return home.
