Nothing compares to the picturesque scenery of Miramar Beach, which offers the epitome of Gulf Coast vistas. One glance at this stunning beach, and you’ll understand the origins of the term ‘Emerald Coast.’ The water boasts a splendid emerald hue, which beautifully contrasts the dazzling white of the soft sand. This is the type of beach you typically see on postcards, and yet, it’s far more accessible than you previously imagined.
When you picture the beach experience in and around Miramar Beach, you may assume that access is only available via private condos or hotels. You might also picture college students or young professionals looking to let loose and party. Miramar Beach defies both expectations.
Accessible to the public, this kid-friendly beach is an ideal getaway for young families. It’s also well-suited to seniors, couples, and anybody else seeking relaxation. Although it tends to be quite busy during the summer, it rarely feels rowdy. Few Destin-area beach locations offer such a seamless blend of convenience and serenity. In fact, it’s only 9 miles from the heart of Destin.
Perhaps one of the most notable aspects of this beach is its immaculate nature — even after a busy day. Walton County workers make every effort to keep the beach pristine. Their hard work certainly pays off; no matter how busy the beach gets during the day, you can return the next morning and find it perfectly clean.
Free public parking is available at the public access site by Pompano Joe’s. However, keep in mind that parking is often at a premium — and that the public access lot gets decidedly crowded during peak hours. The same can be said of the limited parallel parking available within walking distance of the beach. If possible, stop by early to snag a decent spot. Likewise, don’t expect your spot to remain available if you leave for lunch in hopes of returning later. For this reason, many all-day visitors prefer to pack snacks or walk to grab food rather than drive to local restaurants.
If possible, consider biking to the beach and locking up your wheels at one of the bike racks located at the main public access point. You’ll enjoy the relaxed ride, and, more importantly, won’t have to stress about parking.
If there’s an upside to visiting the public access beach during a busy afternoon, it’s that the crowds lend themselves to excellent people-watching. You won’t find as many drunken shenanigans here as you might on other top beaches, but you will see people jogging, practicing yoga, and looking for shells. The locals and tourists who frequent this beach rarely struggle to get along. It’s not unheard of for visitors to make friends while lounging near one another. What’s not to love about a beautiful beach full of friendly faces?
